Bangalore: An effective BI strategy will obviously include IT. What else is required to ensure that you have a strong strategy in place? Gartner thinks any enterprise could be benefitted by asking itself three questions:

1)    What is the organization’s business goal?
This could be using BI to make smarter choices. Will new business intelligence improve your revenue? Will it help in cost reduction or improving customer service?

2)    Who will use the information obtained by BI for attaining your business objective?
This could be your product development team which needs competitive design information or your overseas manufacturing facility which needs to improve internal processes.

3)    How can you extract the data to be used and understand it?
This is where IT usually focuses on technical provisioning, competence, and execution.

In order to make BI really work for your organization you will have to focus on working outside traditional boundaries.

IT should not be an isolated team working away from the business units. When the business analyst /programmer works right next to the business partner, they can see firsthand what is the impact of information on the company. The best practices could be shared with the rest of the organization. In the traditional model of an enterprise, IT and business units had their own department goals, performance goals and rewards. However both teams ought to be held accountable to the same objective and have a shared reward system.

Instead of sourcing BI internally from financials, sales and customer service metrics, you could integrate BI from social media, blogs and other interactive sources. The delivery of BI ought to be consumer friendly.

Once you have tried some of these fresh ideas, you should again ask yourself whether you met your business objective. The end goal is just to make better decisions.
