Current Job description
In my current role I manage EMC India COE Lab team comprising of system and storage engineers whose core functions are into setup, install, configure and manage end to end datacenter lab environments (compute, network, storage, operating systems and applications)for multiple engineering business units, providing professional and technical leadership. I lead and oversee functional initiatives like Lab as a service (LaaS), Weekend Shutdown program(WSP), decommissioning and support services and also ensure availability of datacenter lab 24x7.
I constantly work towards improving my emotional intelligence. I set ambitious 'stretch' goals for myself and raise the bar gradually by accepting additional responsibilities and challenges. I prioritize my tasks with a focus to achieve the desired result. I help employees understand the underlying connection between their actions and bottom-line organizational success. I also enroll in different management programs to keep the learning curve higher.
Important career decisions
Coming from an Instrumentation and Electronics background I chose the storage domain, because I could foresee how the world was moving towards data digitization and was fascinated with the need for data storage infrastructure to embrace this change. Through this domain I have learnt and worked on cutting edge data storage products and technologies.
Often employees feel that their grievances are above all. I have one to one conversations to discuss their issues openly, be empathic, acknowledge and check if I can handle their issues within the discussion with the employee. I keep an open mind, act fair and try to resolve their issues within a specific timeline. If the issue is beyond the scope of my purview, I escalate the issue to the right department/person within the organization and bring it to closure.
Employees like to be ledin a way that; enables professional growth, ownership of their actions and results and that helps them to like and connect better to the purpose of their role. They dislike being controlled all the time and expect their leaders to understand them.My advice to leaders would to help and motivate your team to set ambitious yet realistic goals, give them their space and be forgiving to honest mistakes made and risks taken in pursuit of goals. Celebrate and recognize team’s efforts and accomplishments both as they progress and accomplish.
It is important for every leader to develop self-emotional intelligence (EQ) to become a successful leader. EQ is the level of your ability to understand other people, what motivates them and how to work cooperatively with them. Leaders with a high degree of emotional intelligence are better qualified to assess their feelings and judge how their emotions can affect other people.
Managing personal and professional life
The challenge that we face today is information and decisions being interpreted in different ways, with people around, both in personal as well as professional space. I feel we need to be open and seek inputs on understanding of information or decisions, have interactive dialogue to understand and bring more clarity. It is essential to clear perceptions getting built around key decisions made with the right reasoning. It is also important to have effective bi-directional communication to understand the significance of the decisions and its impact and what it means to the individual
My views on India Technical development
India's education system needs to undergo a shift with more emphasis on practical application of a concept by innovating or developing rather than confining to conceptual knowledge. We need to focus and coordinate a lot more on industry-academic interaction programs where students get familiarized to emerging technologies, products and areas of applications which make them more focused in developing deep competencies and expertise to innovate. Work environment should motivate individuals to be innovative, industry and government needs to invest more in education and innovation.
My family includes my wife who works with Juniper Networks as an iX –Information Experience Engineer and my two year old daughter. My father was a government employee and my mother a house wife. I lost both of them recently to prolonged illness.
Well, through my existence different individuals have influenced my life. As a child, my parents gave me the freedom to explore and learn. Being realistic, patient, hardworking, and self-trust are specific qualities I have learnt from them. After marriage, my wife has been the best critic, and a best friend. She has influenced me a lot to accept criticism and adapt to changes. As a father my daughter teaches me to be patient, strong and be creative.
